Arab League sees Israeli measures as declaring war
Regional, Politics, 8/6/1997
The Arab League yesterday considered Israelšs crackdown in Palestinian self-rule areas after the two death attacks in Jerusalem, as a declaration of war. "The leaguešs council strongly condemns the Israeli measures... and considers them a declaration of war against the Palestinian people and its political leadership," it stated.
"The leaguešs council confirms that this explosive situation and the acts of stopping the peace process due to Israelšs practices are not adhering to signed agreements... the council totally rejects Israeli allegations holding the Palestinian Authority responsible for the violence."
Dr. Esmat Abdel Maguid, AL Secretary-general, said he would send messages to the United Nations, European Union, Organization of African Unity and other international bodies urging action to lift Israelšs blockade of Palestinian areas.
