Jordan urges Israel to keep door open for Middle East peace
Jordan, Politics, 8/5/1997

Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Fayez Al Tarawneh urged Israel to keep the door open for the peace process in the Middle East by keeping talks with the Palestinians alive, saying the choice not to would be a calamity for the whole region.

He also added that King Hussein will discuss with Yasser Arafat ways of defusing the deepening crisis in Israeli-Palestinian ties which worsened after the latest suicide bombing.

Tarawneh also criticized Israeli security measures against Palestinians in the fight against Palestinian resistancemen following the suicide bombing, saying such acts hindered the ability of Palestinians to stop violence.

Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat also responded to the measures by sending a letter to the Arab League, discussing the issue today, in which he mentioned 12 measures taken by Israel, including stopping tax transfer and other funds to the Palestinian Authority, barring the movement of ambulances or doctorsą vehicles and preventing Palestinian fishermen from sailing in the territorial waters of Gaza.
