Hizbullah disavows involvement in Israel suicide attacks
Lebanon, Local, 8/5/1997

After a report by an Israeli newspaper that an unnamed Israeli security official said that the Israeli police were trying to determine if the bombs contained the same articles and the same type of explosives normally used by Hizbullah in its fights with Israeli troops in the occupied zone in South Lebanon and western Bekaa, Hizbullah denied any involvement in or responsibility for the market bombings in Jerusalem last week that killed 15 people.

Meanwhile Hizbullah denounced on August 4 the seizure and interrogation of a Maronite priest in Jezzine, father Raymond Eid, by the South Lebanon Army (SLA), saying it refuted Israeli claims that resistance attacks on Jezzine were not driven by sectarian considerations.

Sheikh Nabil Qaouk, Hizbullah's leader in the south said, "Israeli aggression against our people in Jezzine clearly reveals the intentions of Israel and its allies against the region's residents and undermines their attempts to instigate sectarian strife in the area."

He went on to say, "We salute our people in Jezzine and call on them to defend themselves and their clergy and back the resistance movement."

Sheikh Afif Naboulsi, president of Jabal Amel Association, said, "The seizure of father Eid is the latest episode of Zionist assaults against Islamic and Christian sanctuaries... Lebanon needs people like father Eid whose nationalism and belief in coexistence have materialized in his actions."
