Saudi to develop industry in Asir
Saudi Arabia, Economics, 8/4/1997
Saudi Arabia plans to develop an industrial zone in the southwestern Asir farming region where 67 industrial projects will be implemented soon, the industry minister said.
Industry and Electricity Minister Hashem Yamani was quoted in the daily Saudi news as saying the new projects represented investment of 366 million dollars.
"This will help promote development in the Asir province," Yamani said. He did not give a time frame for implementing the project or setting up the industrial zone.
The projects will bring to 120 the number of industrial concerns in the region, Yamani said.
About 1.1 million people live in the mountainous Asir region where agriculture is the main economic activity.
Asir is a politically sensitive region. It was part of Yemen until 1932, when it was ceded to Saudi Arabia as part of a treaty ending a brief war. Yemen has recently renewed claims on sovereignty, and the territory figures in talks to end the long the-running border dispute which are currently under way.
