Al-Sayoph sings Uruk's Song
Iraq, Culture, 8/2/1997
"Uruk's Song" is a new book of poetry written by Iraqi poet Adnan al-Sayoph, who lived amidst the catastrophes of wars in his homeland, Iraq.
In his poetic epic al-Sayoph depicts Iraq's successive civilizations, tyrants, wars and calamities, poetry, history, cultural heritage, biographies, philosophies and great events, all of which come together through the character of Aboud, the Arab man, who presents a cry of protest in the face of what is happening, of destruction and decay.
Uruk is an ancient city in south Mesopotamia. The site has links to the beginning of Sumerian civilization. Gilgamesh was one of its rulers.
