Mummification mystery may finally be unraveled
Egypt, Culture, 8/2/1997
An Egyptian citizen from Edfu, upper Egypt, claims to have finally found the mummification secret.
Aged 68, Essa Ahmed Al, nicknamed Essa Elbahlouli, lived all his life in the arms of Edfu temples. With his repeated visits to the temple Elbahlouli knew much about the inscriptions and the secrets of the temple.
He developed such an irresistible interest in the life of the ancient Egyptians that he started to make experiments using certain plants. By extracting their oils, he fixed certain formulas with which he mummified different kinds of fish and animals like rabbits, rats, frogs, snakes, and even birds.
He injected the animals with an effective substance that helped dry the animals and birds, preserving their intestines. He would then leave the animals to dry for three days.
