Syria condemns US Congressional draft resolution
Syria, Economics, 7/23/1997
Syrian newspapers condemned a draft resolution issued by the US Congress imposing economic sanctions on Syria. The draft resolution bans all kinds of commercial dealings between the US and Syrian institutions.
President Clinton, who is supposed to ratify the resolution if Congress approves it, expressed his rejection of the resolution. The Teshrine newspaper said, "The resolution adopted by the Congress to suspend commercial dealings with the US shows the grave Jewish influence in this American legislative body."
Despite the American administration and political commentators¹ opposition, taking such an unfriendly step against the Syrian people emphasizes that the Congress, when dealing with an Arab cause, has become more Zionistic than the Israeli Kinisit itself," the newspaper added .
It is widely believed that if the resolution is adopted , it will weaken the American role in the Middle East peace process, deprive the U.S companies of possible investment opportunities in Syria.
