Arab NGOS conference opens, Israeli anti-peace policy condemned
Syria, Politics, 7/23/1997
Deliberations of the Arab Governmental Organizations (NGOS) conference started in Syria with the participation of some political parties and vocational unions from the Arab countries.
The Syrian delegation to the conference was led by Ahmed al-Asaad, a member of the central leadership of the Progressive National Front and Secretary General of the Democratic Socialist Unionist Party.
Al-Saad delivered a speech greeting all the participants on behalf of the Syrian president Hafez al-Assad.
He referred to Syria's serious efforts for realizing just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the international legitimacy resolutions 242, 338 and 425. He said that just peace cannot coexist with occupation because peace must lead to regaining the Palestinian rights and the withdrawal of Israel from the occupied Arab territories.
He added that Israel is delaying the peace process with its policy of racism and expansion.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Hamroush, chairman of the Egyptian Committee for Solidarity and head of the conference delivered a speech on behalf of the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stressing the importance of setting up the Arab common market. He also placed emphasis on rejecting all forms of normalization of relations with Israel, and urged all the Arab nations to support the Syrian stand for regaining the Golan.
