Yemen gets water grant
Yemen, Economics, 7/21/1997
Yemen has received a Japanese grant of 988 million Yen (8.6 million US dollars) to finance a water drainage and distribution project, the Japanese embassy announced on July 17.
The embassy said that, "The Yemeni government will use this grant to finance the purchase of the necessary equipment," for the distribution and drainage project east of Aden, the Southern regional capital on the Red Sea.
The latest grant raises the total amount of Japanese aid since 1981 to Yemen, one of the world's poorest countries, to 56 million US dollars. Most of the Japanese aid has been targeted to implementing a variety of water projects.
In 1977, Sanaa also received a soft-term loan from Japan for 33 million US dollars.
