Saddam calls for an end to sanctions
Iraq, Politics, 7/18/1997

Yesterday in a 3-hour televised speech, celebrating the anniversary of the Iraqi Revolution which brought his party to power 29 years ago, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein warned that Iraqi/UN relations could reach a dead end if the latter does not lift the sanctions imposed on Iraq for almost six years now.

Saddam said, "We do not want the relations between Iraq and the Security Council, or between Iraq¹s representatives and the UN Special Commission (UNCOM) to reach a dead end. We hope that the Council will take measures which could convince us that it has actually started to fulfill its obligations."

"Iraq has met its obligations` It is unacceptable, then, that the Security Council does not acknowledge these Iraqi sacrifices and consequently fulfill its obligations by lifting the embargo completely," he added. The president stated: "As the peoples of Iraq supported their leader and were tenacious toward their right of sovereignty, the American administration urged the SC to adopt a draft resolution to forbid Iraqi nationals from traveling abroad last June."
