Circumcision: Not Again!
Egypt, Medicine, 7/16/1997

Efforts to issue a Health Ministry ban on female circumcision in Egypt seem to be fruitless after one year of hot discussions and controversies. A recent Cairo court ruling overturning the ban is by a setback for those fighting the practice.

In its ruling, the court mentioned that the ban was due to an "abuse of power" on the part of the Health Ministry, and circumcision may still be made.

A UNICEF spokesman, Patrick McCormick, said, "We are very disappointed. This a setback."

A US State Department officer, John Dinger, stated: "The United States strongly supported the decision to ban this abhorrent practice. The US Government will continue to urge an end to this violence against women. It has been widely condemned by international experts as damaging to both the physical and psychological health of women."
