Egypt, Economics, 7/8/1997
Next month Egypt is expected to get the second tranche of compensation for Egyptians harmend by the Gulf war. The payout hinges on reviewing the oil-for-food deal between the UN and Iraq. Minister of Manpower and Immigration Ahmed al-Amawi said in a statement yesterday that under agreeements with the UN compensations committee, Egypt would receive compensation worth 823 million US dollars in six trenches spanning 18 months.
Egypt received the first part, worth 58 million dollars US, last May and distributed it to 23,000 victims.
Al-Amawi voiced the hope that the oil-for-food deal would continue to provide compensation for countries, including Egypt, affected by Iraq's 1990 thrust into neighboring Kuwait. He pointed out that the deal included allocating 30 percent of the revenues for compensation.
