Syria-Iran higher commission opens meeting

The Syrian President Hafez Al Assad received Iran's Vice-president Dr. Hassan Habibi, Foreign Minister Dr. Ali Akhbar Velayati and members of the accompanying delegation in the presence of The Iranian Ambassador in Damascus, Hassan Akhtari on July 6.

The meeting was attended by the Vice-president of Syria, Mr. Abdul Halim Khaddam, Syrian Foreign Minister Mr. Farouk Al Shara', deputy foreign minister Raslan Alloush and Syria's ambassador in Tehran. The first session of the joint higher political commission between the two countries was held, during which items on the meeting's agenda were discussed. Talks also dealt with Turkish-Israeli relations, the situation in northern Iran and the Israeli anti-peace policy in the region.

The joint higher commission will resume discussing these issues on July 6. Meanwhile a work meeting was held on July 5 at the Commercial Bank of Syria in the course of meetings of the Syrian-Iranian joint higher commission during which results of previous meetings and steps carried out in various economic fields were discussed.

For the Syrian side, the ministers of economy and foreign trade, state of planning affairs, communications and industry attended the meeting.

Whereas the Iranian side was represented by the housing minister and post, telegraph and telephone minister.

Participants in the meeting discussed prospects of strengthening and developing economic cooperation relations and trade exchange between the two friendly countries and executive steps on issues approved in previous meetings in various economic, trade, electricity industry and supply fields and on setting up joint investment companies and projects.
