Hariri encourages private Moroccan investors to invest in Lebanon
Lebanon-Morocco, Economics, 7/3/1997
Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri arrived on July 1 in Rabat for a three-day visit to Morocco to discuss a proposed free trade zone between the two countries. During a meeting with Moroccan Premier and Foreign Minister Abdel Latif Filali, Hariri focused on the consequences of the deadlock in the Middle East peace process, and especially the future of Jerusalem, according to sources close to the talks.
The two leaders also studied the prospects for cooperation between their countries regarding setting up an Arab common market, and the European-Mediterranean partnership agreement on economic, security and political policies. They discussed enhancing bilateral economic ties by setting up a free trade zone between Lebanon and Morocco.
Initialing an agreement on investments and boosting tourism are also on Hariri's agenda. He proposed creating a Lebanese-Moroccan committee to deal with various proposals.
Earlier Hariri told the Moroccan news agency he planned to meet private sector investors and encourage them to invest in Lebanon's multi-billion dollar reconstruction projects.
Hariri is scheduled to hold talks with King Hassan II, who along with Saudi King Fahd and former Algerian president Chadli Ben Jadid, played a principal role in putting an end to violence in Lebanon in 1989. The three leaders, who formed a mediating committee according to a summit decision, also fostered the Taif agreement.
