Algeria, Local, 6/30/1997
A bomb exploded on a busy Algiers street on June 26 killing four women, the latest victims in an upsurge of Islamic violence in Algeria. Eighteen people were injured, six seriously, in the blast in the working class E1 Harrach district, hospital sources said. The bombers had apparently targeted a passing police van in the attack.
The bombs exploded on a train in the same district on June 25, leaving 14 passengers injured.
The latest incident followed reports in newspapers in Algeria on June 26 that suspected Muslim extremists killed 15 civilians in an attack in a the Salasudan region 400 kilometers southwest of Algeria, and security forces killed 10 rebels in return.
In a separate operation in Algeria Aissa Satouri, an armed rebel who is thought to be behind several dozen attacks, was killed by security forces in El-Gaada in the southern Aflou region.
The attacks bring to more than 200 the number killed since last month.
