Call for a new Arab superpower
Lebanon, Politics, 6/25/1997

At the opening session of the 35th conference of the Arab Administrative Development Organization at the Summerland hotel in Beirut on June 23, Lebanese Minister of Administrative Reform Beshara Merhej stressed the importance of Arab coordination and a shared administrative policy as the only options for Arab empowerment.
Merhej admitted the main obstacle was the obvious lack of regional resources management. He admitted the road to development, synonymous with administrative reform, would not be easy.
Ahmed Saker Ashour, director general of the organization said several Arab nations recently adopted administrative and economic reform programs.
Ashour said the main role of the organization was to provide a platform for the exchange of experience among Arab countries and to provide expertise and information from other parts of the world.
Jordan, Tunisia, Kuwait, Egypt, and Morocco presented papers on their experiences and goals for administrative reform.
Lebanese President Elias Hrawi urged Arab countries to unite to form a new world superpower when he addressed the 15 Arab countries representatives, who called on the president in Baabda while participating in the conference on administrative development in Beirut.
