Israeli official discuss in Egypt the Gaza peace
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 5/27/2008

A senior Israeli defense ministry official is due to return to Cairo next week for talks in an attempt to reach calm in the Gaza Strip, a ministry spokesman said yesterday.

Amos Gilad, a senior aide to Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who was in Cairo on Sunday, will return to Cairo next week,' Israeli Defense ministry spokesman Ronen Moshe said.

The Egyptian-mediated talks on a possible truce have had no concrete result until now, thus increasing the risk of a new outbreak of violence, Israeli military radio reported yesterday.

On Sunday, Gilad held talks with the head of Egyptian intelligence Omar Suleiman who has been mediating between Israel and Palestinian militant factions, the official Egyptian agency Mena reported.

The European Union's Special Representative to the Middle East peace process Marc Otte said that the freedom of movement in the Palestinian territory is very essential and basic need.

In a statement to al-Ayyam Newspaper, Otte stressed that Israeli should understand that settlements are against its interest, calling for accelerating the process of negotiations and reaching an agreement on the borders of the state.

As for the calm, Otte said that there should be an agreement on reopuining the crossings under the auspices of President Mahmoud Abbas legitimate authority and his government.
