Gaza electricity station shut down
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 5/13/2008

Electricity generation shut down for more than 24 hours as Gaza City power plant ran out of fuel on Saturday and did not receive an expected shipment on Sunday.

Gaza's power station supplies electricity to about a third of the territory's homes, with most of the rest supplied directly by Israel.

The UN aid agencies are warning that essential civilian services will be badly affected unless fuel to be supplied soon.

While the fuel is paid for mainly by the European Union, as Gaza has no functioning air or sea terminals its delivery is dependent on passage through Israeli borders.

The United Nations has condemned Israeli blockade of Gaza Strip which has caused humanitarian crisis for Gaza's 1.5 million residents.

The Gazan population faces frequent shortages of many everyday supplies.

The UN also condemned Israel's response to concern of international community over the "unjust" situation Israel created for Palestinians living in their homeland in Gaza Strip.
