Village tales: the outlaw
Regional, Essay, 4/30/2008
In remembrance of Jesus Christ. Republished from 12/25/2002 :
And so the story goes, the adulteress women was brought before him guilty of sin, and they asked that she be stoned. It was the law they wanted observed.
He said to the accusers: He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone.
And the accusers started to leave one by one, till they were all gone.
He then told the woman: Go and sin no more.
He spoke to others outside his religion.
They wanted to know about the law, eating and drinking. He said: It is not what you put in your mouth that defiles you, it is what comes out of it.
The law was meant to serve men and not for men to serve the law. And so it was time for his final act. To make of the old stories a reality, to fulfill them and thus put an end to them. So he assumed the role, knowing full-well he will be made a lamb; a sacrificial lamb. But he felt is was to be done, as the only way to break with the past, and to put an end to the monopoly of hoarding God and morality, and to share the true gift that he thought belong to all, setting them free from the burden of the law.
And there, after the innocence stood by the guilty and showed grace, he stood alone, hanging, innocence undefended by anyone.
