Anti-war protests at Blair's first faith lecture
Iraq-UK, Politics, 3/31/2008
Anti-war protesters are holding a demonstration to create a "wall of sound" to accompany the first lecture given by former prime minister on Faith and Globalization since stepping down from power last year.
Stop the War Coalition (STWC), organizing the protest, suggested that the former premier was "a war criminal who should have been silenced five years ago by MPs" before leading Britain to join the disastrous US-led invasion of Iraq.
"No doubt Blair will be pontificating about the 'values' and 'morality' of his 'faith' and how they guided him in making 'difficult' decisions, like the slaughter of up to one million Iraqis and the total destruction of their country," STWC said.
His speech, at Westminster Cathedral in London on Thursday, is the first of a series on faith and life in Britain organized by the Catholic Church, which he converted to last December.
Later this year, Blair is also due to set up his own faith foundation and is also teaching a course on faith and globalization at Yale University in the US.
This is apart from his role at the Quartet's envoy to the Middle East and several commercial jobs.
"We will meet every hypocritical word he utters with a wall of sound representing the values and morality of that majority, which was against the war in 2003 and wants all the troops withdrawn now," STWC said.
Britain's biggest peace group said that they were calling on all demonstrators to bring musical instruments and sound making implements of every kind -- drums, trumpets, saxophones, violins, cymbals, whistles, sirens, horns, rattles, saucepans and cans.
"We want every type of band, choir and musical group to join us, all with the aim of drowning out the speech of a man who should not be in a cathedral pulpit but in the dock of a criminal court," it said.
