Egypt's human rights record denounced by European Union
Egypt-European Union, Politics, 1/22/2008
Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul-Gheit complained yesterday about the European Parliament resolution denouncing Egypt's human rights saying Egypt has made improvements in the fields of democracy, freedoms and human rights.
Abul-Gheit highlighted steps taken over the past years aimed at promoting human rights in Egypt saying: "the authors have overlooked the reforms carried out by the Egyptian government over the past years, they have highlighted the role played by Egypt in the Middle East peace process, and the efforts exerted to control borders with Gaza and put a halt to tunnel-smuggling, which leads us to question the motives behind the resolution," according to the Egypt State Information Service.
