Ahmadi-Nejad: participation in gulf summit was a political message
Gulf-Iran, Politics, 12/18/2007
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad said Sunday that the recent summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council would have impact on regional peace and security. In a live televised debate, he said his first ever presence in the summit bore the message that a "new era in relations" between Iran and the gulf states had begun.
He said the meeting had been held in a sincere atmosphere. President last week welcomed the idea of a joint organization between Iran and gulf member states.
This was the first time that an Iranian president was invited to attend a gulf summit.
In his address to the summit, President Ahmadi-Nejad made a string of proposals for economic and security cooperation.
He said the six oil-rich Gulf Arab states, namely Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain as well as Iran should work together to establish "regional security and economic pacts" without foreign influence.
Meantime, The Second Zone Commander of the Naval Force of the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps (IRGC) General Ali Razmju said on Saturday that forces under his command guarantee security of the country's territorial waters in Persian Gulf with full strength.
Briefing reporters on the "Shahamat" (Courage) War game to be staged this year, Razmju said the maneuver, to be conducted in three phases for four days on in an area of 7,000 square miles from north of Bushehr province to Assalouyeh general zone as of Sunday, will involve hundreds of launching vessels, torpedoes, marines, divers, and Basijis. He said different kinds of equipment and new vessels will be showcased in the exercise whose aim is to repel likely threats of enemies and guarantee security of Persian Gulf, islands and coastlines.
