Iran, Egypt discuss promotion of ties
Egypt-Iran, Politics, 12/18/2007

Head of Iran's interest section in Cairo, Hossein Rajabi, discussed Tehran-Cairo relations with speaker of the People's Assembly of Egypt Ahmed Fathi Sorour on Sunday.

They stressed significance of promoting parliamentary relations between the two capitals for development of bilateral economic, political and cultural ties.

Rajabi expressed Tehran's readiness for boosting parliamentary relations with Cairo through exchange of visits and sharing experiences.

He also urged the need for further bilateral and international cooperation.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian official referred to an upcoming visit to Egypt by his Iranian counterpart, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, saying the visit would play a key role in promotion of bilateral parliamentary relations.

The Iranian Majlis speaker is invited by Sorour to pay a visit to Cairo in late January to attend a meeting of the Islamic Interparliamentary Union (IPU) in the Egyptian capital.

The meeting will be held between January 29-February 1.

Haddad-Adel will be the highest ranking Iranian official to visit Egypt after the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Referring to the Iranian Majlis speaker's visit to Egypt as a "turning point" at the history of the two states' relations, Sorour said such visits would help promote bilateral ties in all fields.

Iran and Egypt currently have only interest sections in either country.
