Mottaki: US is aware of consequences of military attacks on Iran
Iraq-Iran-USA, Politics, 10/23/2007

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Saturday strongly rejected any US military action against Iran and said, "We have warned Washington of the consequences of a military attack on Iran and they are fully aware of the aftermath of such madness."

Speaking to reporters after the 17th annual meeting of the Council of Ministers (COM) of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), he said the Afghan nation will never let the US use its soil to target any country.

The Americans are now facing a serious challenge to their globalization system and cannot afford to create a new crisis in the region, he underlined.

The US has never experienced such a tough situation, he said adding that they imagined that after the collapse of former Soviet Union the era of unipolar world would be on the agenda and they would have the final say in all affairs. This idea forced the US to invade Iraq, he said.

Three months after the occupation of Iraq, the US president in an interview declared that the war in Iraq is over but the country is under their occupation for more than four and a half years, he said. All political analysts along with the people of the region believe that the US has been defeated in Iraq, he declared.

Two days ago, US Vice President Dick Cheney said "The Iranian regime's efforts to destabilize the Middle East and to gain hegemonic power is a matter of record. And now, of course, we have the inescapable reality of Iran's nuclear program; a program they claim is strictly for energy purposes, but which they have worked hard to conceal; a program carried out in complete defiance of the international community and resolutions of the UN Security Council. Iran is pursuing technology that could be used to develop nuclear weapons. The world knows this. The Security Council has twice imposed sanctions on Iran and called on the regime to cease enriching uranium. Yet the regime continues to do so, and continues to practice delay and deception in an obvious attempt to buy time.
Given the nature of Iran's rulers, the declarations of the Iranian President, and the trouble the regime is causing throughout the region -- including direct involvement in the killing of Americans -- our country and the entire international community cannot stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its most aggressive ambitions."

He added "The Iranian regime needs to know that if it stays on its present course, the international community is prepared to impose serious consequences. The United States joins other nations in sending a clear message: We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. The irresponsible conduct of the ruling elite in Tehran is a tragedy for all Iranians. The regime has passed up numerous opportunities to be a positive force in the Middle East. For more than a generation, it had only isolated a great nation, suppressed a great people, and subjected them to economic hardship that gets worse every year."

But the Iranian official had said "Only for the sake of the Iraqi nation, Iran held three rounds of talks with the US to help restore security to the country, he said. They have no scenario at hands and never listen to any logic to rescue themselves from the Iraq crisis." He told reporters that there is no need for fake negotiations.

Meantime, Newly appointed Iranian Secretary of Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei said on Saturday that Iran will thwart US threats, calling for vigilance vis-a-vis President George W. Bush's war-mongering statement. "The Iranian nation will thwart any aggression on Iran thanks to national perseverance and resistance. I believe that dialogue and logic will help the nation pass such a critical situation," Rezaei said.
