Support for Iran's nuclear rights despite sanctions pressure
Iran-UN, Politics, 7/23/2007
Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency will hold second round of talks on Iran's nuclear program tomorrow.
Iran's IAEA envoy Ali-Asghar Soltanieh said that the talks will be at the same level as before and in two morning and afternoon sessions. The previous round of talks between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog was held from July 12-13, headed by deputy of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Javad Vaeedi and IAEA deputy chief Olli Heinonen.
Meantime, Iranian Presidential advisor Mojtaba Samareh Hashemi said today that recognizing Iran's nuclear rights is the result of resistance of the Iranian nation. He said Iran's nuclear stands are fully transparent and explicit. Iran is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), he said adding that rules and regulations of both NPT and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have recognized Iran's nuclear rights.
Iran does not want anything more than its rights, he said reiterating that Tehran believes its rights should be observed. There is no way other than recognizing Iran's nuclear rights, Hashemi, who is also deputy interior minister for political affairs, added.
Secretary General of Islamic Parliamentary Union (ICPU) said here Monday stands adopted and moves made by US government regarding Iran's peaceful nuclear program are outside framework of international laws, politically motivated.
Ebrahim Owf further reiterated in an interview with IRNA on the sidelines of the 11th Arab & African Parliaments Conference in Syrian capital city, Damascus, "The entire world nations, particularly those that have signed the nuclear non proliferation treaty (NPT), are entitled to have peaceful access to full cycle of the nuclear technology." He added, "In accordance with that treaty, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the nuclear countries are obliged to assist the countries that wish to have access to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes." The Secretary General of the ICPU emphasized, "US accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding Tehran's nuclear program are quite baseless, and fully politically motivated." Owf reiterated, "Keeping in mind that Iran is both a member of the IAEA, and that Tehran has signed the NPT and accepted voluntarily to yield by its non-obligatory Additional Protocol, prove that Iran has an absolute right to pursue its nuclear program, and the other countries must respect this natural right." Also, Lesotho's Foreign Minister Mohlabi Tsekoa said on Saturday that no country is authorized to prevent Iran as well as other countries from making use of peaceful nuclear energy.
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Sunday stressed purposeful dialogue with IAEA to settle remaining obscure points in Iran's nuclear case. Rapporteur of National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Majlis Kazem Jalali yesterday quoted Mottaki as telling the Majlis Commission that IAEA's influential role in connection with Iran's nuclear issue is of significance.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said Sunday evidence shows that so-called Group 5+1 has developed a more logical approach to Iran's nuclear case. "We have always stressed continuation of a logical approach and negotiations. We feel and evidence shows this approach has been also developed among members of Group 5+1 (Russia, China, France, Britain and the US plus Germany)," Hosseini said in response to a question on a delay by the UN Security Council to examine sanctions against Iran.
He added, "Our talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are currently underway.
"Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani and the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana are also holding talks and will continue their talks in the future." He described as "constructive and upward" the trend of Iran-IAEA and Larijani-Solana talks.
Asked about the date IAEA inspectors would inspect Arak heavy water research reactor, he added, "Based on agreements reached at the first round of talks between Iran and the agency, the sides are currently studying the issue. The IAEA inspectors will visit Arak reactor on due time."
