Hariri: Dialogue is the only option for Lebanese
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 6/25/2007
Head of the Future Bloc in Parliament MP Saad Hariri called on the opposition to engage in dialogue and expressed readiness for a 'media truce' to pave way for discussions on proposals made by Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa who ended a mission to Beirut aimed at resolving the country's crisis.
Hariri emphasized the need for dialogue ahead of presidential elections and warned against the formation of a second government, saying it was a "trap" placed by the Syrian regime and will only serve Israel.
In an interview with LBC Television, Head of the Future Bloc recalled that the government had requested Arab League intervention following the assassination of MP Walid Edio, to discuss the situation along the border with Syria and the infiltration of arms and terrorists, as well as Syrian intervention. He made clear that the March 14 coalition had accepted two proposals conveyed by the opposition to Mr. Moussa, but the opposition later rescinded due to outside pressure, mainly from the Syrian regime. He cited signals made to the opposition by the regime manifested in the public threats by Syrian Vice President Farouk el-Sheraa to shut down the borders with Lebanon. He added, the Arab League's mission faced stumble blocks when the opposition demanded some government decisions be revoked.
Hariri said the government is legitimate and the target of this request was the international tribunal in Prime Minister Rafic Hariri's assassination.
Head of the Future Bloc told LBC the Syrian regime is working against Lebanon and is pushing the opposition towards the creation of a second government, which is a "trap" that will serve Israel since internal divisions will prevent the unity shown during Israel's aggressions.
Hariri stressed that there are ongoing negotiations between Israel and Syria and reports that settlements in the occupied Golan Heights can remain if a solution is reached.
