Saudi - Iran FMs discuss Lebanon crisis
Lebanon-Iran, Politics, 5/28/2007

Foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia held talks by telephone yesterday about the current developments in Lebanon and their latest joint efforts to help Lebanese sides find suitable ways out of the current crisis in that country.

According to the press office of Iranian foreign ministry, Iranian Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in his talks with his Saudi counterpart Saud al-Faisal referred to contacts of the UN chief and also speaker of the Lebanese parliament with him about Lebanon and hoped that further consultations would bring about a solution to control the current crisis.

Mottaki said any event which disturbs security and stability in Lebanon is dangerous, adding that social and humanitarian issues in Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon should be given due consideration.

Mottaki underlined that any issue which could provoke discord among Lebanese sides and lead to a more complicated situation should be considered as counterproductive.

Both foreign ministers have reportedly described as dangerous the recent clashes in Nahr al-Bared Camp, noting that such events would jeopardize the authority of the Lebanese government.

They underlined the need for further bilateral deliberations to find a suitable solution to the current crisis in Lebanon.

Mottaki in a telephone contact with Speaker of Lebanon's parliament Nabih Berri discussed the latest developments in Lebanon and ways to change the current situation there.

Referring to the UN chief's call on Iran to help solve problems of Lebanon, Mottaki said Iran is ready for any effort in this regard.
The Lebanese official told Mottaki that his country is in a shaky and worrisome situation and the problems are not limited to the northern part of his country. He said the current situation is not merely a security disturbance but is rooted in a political crisis. Berri urged the formation of a national unity government as a way out of the current crisis.
They also had agreed that contacts between Iran, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon should be intensified in order to converge different views in Lebanon.
