Pakistan, Syria agree peace in Iraq essential for regional stability
Syria-Pakistan, Politics, 5/21/2007
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri and the visiting Foreign Minister of Syria Walid Al-Moualem Friday shared deep concerns on the ongoing instability and violence in Iraq and the resulting exodus of a large number of Iraqi refugees to the neighboring countries, including Syria.
The two Foreign Ministers in their wide-ranging talks agreed that bringing peace to Iraq was essential for stability in the Middle East region, a Foreign Ministry statement said.
They also discussed the phenomenon of international terrorism and its negative and destabilizing effects on the Muslim world.
The foreign ministers comprehensively reviewed the state of bilateral relations with a view to further intensifying and cementing their ties.
The two foreign ministers underscored the need for regular high-level exchanges and frequent interaction through the existing institutional mechanisms, such as the Joint Ministerial Commission, to bolster bilateral relations in the political and economic fields.
They agreed that considerable potential existed on both sides to further enhance the bilateral trade and economic ties.
The two sides expressed the hope that an early finalization of the proposed Preferential Trade Agreement between Pakistan and Syria would help increase the two-way trade.
The two foreign ministers held in-depth discussions on regional and international issues of interest and concern to both sides, specifically on the situation in Palestine, Iraq and Lebanon.
They agreed on the need for more focused and concerted efforts to address the deteriorating situation in the region.
The comprehensive consultations between the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Syria concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of a mechanism of bilateral political consultations between the two foreign ministries.
The institutionalization of bilateral consultations will facilitate periodic review and lead to the further strengthening and consolidation of bilateral relations in diverse fields.
