President Abbas commemorates 59th anniversary of NAKBA (catastrophe)
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 5/15/2007
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asserted today that the Palestinian people and leadership would never give up their legitimate rights, ending the Israeli occupation, establishing the Palestinian state with Jerusalem, as its capital and the right of return according to the UN resolution 194.
In a televised statement commemorating the 59th anniversary of the Palestinian NAKBA (catastrophe), President Abbas asserted that the Arab Initiative, based on peace for land, is a historical chance for Israel and for the whole region, to end decades of wars and tortures.
He said that for 59 years the Palestinian people have been suffering the most atrocious aggressions.
"We are the generation of NAKBA (and) remember the dark days when we were eradicated from our own lands in 1948 and our people was expelled," he said.
President called on the international community, especially the Quartet Committee, to practice its fair role to end the sanctions against the Palestinian people.
Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said "Jerusalem, divided during the 1948 War of Independence, was reunited in the June 1967 Six Day War. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the city's liberation. The events marking Jerusalem Day 2007 (May 16) began with special government and Knesset sessions on May 13 and 14. Celebrations and events will take place throughout the year in Jerusalem."
NAKBA is the term which refers to the Zionist ethnical cleansing practices by Zionist gangs in 1948 when thousands of Palestinians were murdered, at least 750,000 were exiled and at least 450 villages were demolished and the state of Israel was established on their rubble.
