Egypt, Politics, 5/15/2007

The Higher Election Commission (HEC) in Egypt issued yesterday rules regulating the Shura Council's mid-term elections, set for June 11. The voting process opens at 8:00 am and closes at 7:00 according to HEC regulations.

The commission issued three important decisions including excluding any candidate who use religious logos or symbols. It underlined that the electoral process will be put under complete judicial supervision.

According to the regulations, the electoral commission's head shall affix his signature to a certificate of vote showing that voters cast their ballot.

The commission's secretary shall sign opposite to voters' names on the voter-registration lists. The HEC chairman shall order the formation of commissions to count votes under his supervision at the general commission headquarters. After finalizing the vote counting, results shall be announced by the HEC President.

For his part, Minister of Interior Habib El-Adly issued a decision on Monday setting a date for receiving nomination applications of the Shura Council mid-term elections.

Accordingly nomination applications will be received as of Wednesday till Sunday.

President Hosni Mubarak had called on voters to elect new members of the Shura Council replacing the outgoing members in line with law No.73 of 1956 on organizing and amending the political rights exercise law. The security departments all over the country are due to receive the applications as of 9.30 am till 1.30 pm.
