Iran: security of Persian Gulf thru regional cooperation
Kuwait-Iran, Politics, 5/15/2007

Iran's Interior Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi said yesterday that security in the Middle East will be achieved through regional cooperation.

Pour-Mohammadi, who was speaking to visiting Kuwaiti Deputy Interior Minister Ahmad Abd al-Latif al-Rajib, underlined the need for expansion of security cooperation.

According to the ministry's Public Relation Department, the interior minister contended that Iran does not limit the expansion of sustainable security only through security, adding, "We should make use of economy, tourism and cultural exchanges to stabilize sustainable security, and we are fully ready to develop ties in this respect."

He pointed out, "Iran and Kuwait can rely on their huge financial resources, well-experienced politicians and educated people to provide security in the region without any reliance on other powers." Pointing to the cultural, historical and religious commonalties and the level of exchanges between the two friendly nations, he said that Iranian and Kuwaiti people will definitely welcome strengthening bilateral ties.

Turning to the number of mutual agreements and cooperation as insufficient, he called for expansion of relations, particularly given the high economic potentials and big markets of the two countries.
Pour-Mohammadi also referred to the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein, the former dictator of Iraq, in the last three decades, adding that Saddam provided foreigners with the opportunity to enter the region, invade Iraq and beget crisis in the country.

The Kuwaiti deputy minister, for his part, pointed to his two-day talks with Iranian security officials, saying that the two sides have reached important consensus on establishing direct link between coastal guards of Iran and Kuwait.

Underlining the need for expanding security cooperation in all fields, he added, "Given the common goals of the two countries in the campaign against terrorism and other crimes which threaten security, we should increase the exchange of security information."
