Iran backs nuclear talks based on NPT, IAEA regulations
Iran-UN, Politics, 5/7/2007

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said yesterday Iran supports negotiations within the framework of regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). "Iran has constantly stressed diplomatic ways and supports negotiations within the framework of IAEA and NPT," he told reporters.

"It is the opposite side who has shown stubbornness and made irrational decisions," he said.

The spokesman expressed hope the trend of talks would be supported and strengthened during the new round.

Hosseini said the venue and date of future talks between Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani and the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana have not been determined. "The Swiss proposal was among topics of Larijani-Solana discussions during their recent meeting in Turkey. "The offer has its own points of strength and weakness but can be discussed and examined," Hosseini said.

Asked whether Iran would accept a month-long suspension of enrichment, mentioned in the Swiss proposal, he said, "We have previously expressed our viewpoint on suspension of enrichment.
No change has been made in Iran's stance." The spokesman, however, stressed, "The two sides can examine other technical issues in the talks."

Iran's Ambassador to Bangkok Mohsen Pak-Ayeen said that the outcome of talks between SNSC Secretary Ali Larijani and EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana in Turkey were positive, adding that Europe's rational approach to the issue can lead to future progress on Iran's nuclear issue.

The Iranian diplomat made the statement at a press conference on Wednesday. He added that Iran intends to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, adding that the West cannot call on any country to suspend its legal activities.

"Iran has never violated international laws and its peaceful nuclear activities always observed Non-Proliferation Treaty," he added.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad said Saturday that the Iranians are standing up to materialize their ideals and will not give up even an "iota of their inalienable right to access nuclear energy."

"The Iranian nation stands powerfully to materialize its goals." He stated, "Resolutions and threats of enemies have had no impact on Iran's economy. Foreign investment in Iran has increased." Pointing to success made by Iranian scientists in various fields of science and technology and peaceful nuclear energy in particular, the president said, "Certain powerful states who possess nuclear technology do not let Iran achieve such a valuable technology.

"They are worried Iran will become as a model for other nations, if it acquires nuclear technology." He added that Iran has left behind hard phases, conquering scientific peaks one after the other.
