Egyptian French summit on Middle East issues
Egypt-France, Politics, 4/16/2007
One week ahead of the French presidential elections due to be held on April 22, an Egyptian-French summit will be held in Paris today for discussing bilateral relations between Egypt and France.
The talks between presidents Hosni Mubarak and Jacques Chirac will also tackle a wide range of important issues at the Arab and international levels mainly the Arab Israeli conflict, Darfur problem, the situation in Iraq, developments in Lebanon and the Iranian nuclear file.
President Mubarak will receive at Marigne Palace French Prime Minister Dominique de Villpin. He will meet tomorrow with Nicolas Sarkozi, the French presidential candidate.
The president will also meet with a group of French businessmen and investors.
Presidential Spokesman Awwad said France has recently helped Egypt join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (DECD) to become the first Arab and African state to join the well-off club throughout the world.
Egypt, under President Mubarak, is keen to step up trade, investment and economy as it sees this will be much better for it rather than to ask for assistance, the presidential spokesman added.
Within this context, the two leaders have joined forces to solve the problem of the French company Accor to help Cairo join this club in a bid to lure more investments.
Egypt succeeded in attracting investments over the past two years as they reached $ 7.1 billion during the first half of last year and they are expected to reach $ 8 billion by the end of this year, especially in non-oil sector for the first time, he pointed out.
President Mubarak had arrived in Paris yesterday where he was welcomed by the chief of the French mission of honor, Egyptian Ambassador in Paris Nasser Kamel and the members of the Egyptian community.
