Blair called to account over Iraq war in stage play
Iraq-UK, Politics, 4/16/2007
A stage play is opening in London this week examining whether UK's Prime Minister Tony Blair should be indicted for the Iraq war.
The play entitled "Called to Account" seeks to fill the gap caused by Blair's refusal to hold a public inquiry into the events leading to the US-led invasion in 2003.
"The reason for doing this is that public authorities must be accountable," said Nicholas Kent, director of the Tricycle theater, where the play opens this Thursday.
"We were misled, but there's not been a public inquiry," Kent said about the production, which is based on lengthy interviews with lawmakers, diplomats, international lawyers and UN officials.
The main issues being dealt with include the manipulation of intelligence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, attempts by Britain to security a second UN resolution authorizing the use of force and the role of the attorney general Lord Goldsmith.
Kent said that although Blair does not come out "smelling of roses" in the play, it is really Goldsmith who comes out with a "stinking reputation" after changing his advice to the government to pronounce the war legal just before the invasion.
The play, which is set to run for a month, also threatens to expose further revelations about the dealings in the lead up to the war.
