Larijani: US unilateral measures against Iran fail
Iran-Regional-USA, Politics, 4/9/2007

Iran's Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani said today that the US unilateral measures have failed and its attempts to liberalize Islam and control the Middle East in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine have been fruitless.

The statement was part of a speech delivered by the SNSC secretary at a gathering of clergies and scholars at Navvab Theological School in the provincial capital of Mashhad.

"Given the strategic deadlock facing the US, to cover their weakness, the Americans have targeted Iran," he added.

Turning to Iran's influence in Iraq, which cannot be concealed, he said that this is due to the fact that when measures were taken against the Iraqi people, they were welcomed in Iran as guests.

"The US has realized that today Iran is considered as the heart of world of Islam. Therefore, unity among Muslim Ummah endangers their interests.

"Sowing discord between Shiites and Sunnis as well as regional countries also take place in line with such concerns," he added.

Larijani said that to harness Iran, they made a strategic mistake, given that all Iranians, including those residing in the country and overseas, underline their right to access nuclear technology.

"Nuclear fuel will be the most significant trade item in future and we need the relevant technology to secure our future independence.

This is while, the countries possessing this technology are limited and do not wish to have any rival. "They are worried that Iran may develop the know-how to produce nuclear weapons in future, while in no international law is it possible to punish any individual or country prior to commitment of a crime. Besides, this is also against our Islamic and national beliefs and values," added Larijani.

Stressing that Iran is determined to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, he said, "To end Europe's concerns over the issue, we are prepared to hold talks on the issue. But we will not discuss the nation's nuclear rights."

Meantime, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said yesterday that holding talks with the US was not on Iran's agenda.
"Talks with the US is not on Iran's agenda," Hosseini said in reaction to the readiness announced by the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to meet and talk with her Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki on the sidelines of an upcoming meeting on Iraq.

Pointing to Iran's participation at the meeting, he told reporters at his weekly press conference, "Consultations are currently underway on (determining) the date and venue of the conference. No place has been fixed yet."
