Egypt, Economics, 4/2/2007
Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation will start setting up first experimental farm for growing sugar cane in Tushka with a view to extracting ethanol to be used as an alternative to petroleum derivatives.
Ismail Abdel-Gelil, chairman of the Desert Research Center, said the ministry decided to intensify research the center carries out to extract ethanol fuel from sugar cane, adding the ministry seeks to grow sugar cane in Tushka.
The minister will use sprinkling irrigation system in growing sugar cane in Tushka.
This is the first time in which such system will be used to water sugar cane.
A number of investors contracted to cultivate and reclaim about 1.5 million feddans in Tushka, said Egyptian Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mahmoud Abu-Zeid on Sunday.
The contracts will be referred to the cabinet to assess and study them, added the minister. In statements on the sidelines of a visit he paid to Tushka project Saturday evening, the minister said preparations are under way to set the project's organizational and administrative structure.
The Irrigation Ministry will carry out the project's infrastructure.
