Iranian, Saudi discuss collective defense agreement
Saudi Arabia-Iran, Politics, 4/2/2007

Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Manouchehr Mottaki last week held talks with his Saudi counterpart Saud Al-Faisal on most important issues of the Islamic world and the Middle East.

According to the Iran's Foreign Ministry Press Office, at the meeting on Thursday, the two sides met on the sideline of the summit of Arab heads of states in Riyadh.

Mottaki expressed satisfaction with the initiative of Arab League and the role of Saudi Arabia in inviting non-Arab Islamic states to the summit, and said this will bolster and expand cooperation among regional and Islamic countries.

"Exploring avenues for further cooperation among Islamic states and granting observer status to the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Arab League are on the agenda of the summit," he added.

Mottaki proposed signing of collective defense and security pact which was supported by his Saudi counterpart who promised to personally support the plan in international gatherings and meetings.

Al-Faisal, on his part, underlined the need for constant invitation of Islamic countries to take part in the upcoming sessions of the Arab League.

He said that given Iran's decisive role in boosting cooperation with the Arab League, Saudi Arabia will fully support a plan to admit Iran to the Arab League as an observer member.

The two sides also underlined the need for continuation of political consultations on Lebanon's crisis aimed at settling the problem.
