Egyptian, Saudi ministers in Jordan for Middle East peace talks
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 3/13/2007
The Foreign Ministers of Egypt and Saudi Arabia are to visit Jordan today for talks with King Abdullah II on means of reviving the stalled Middle East peace process.
Spokesman for the Jordanian government Naser Gouda said there is close coordination among the three states to push forward the Middle East peace process.
"There is a window of opportunity that must be seized and we must be optimistic," Gouda said.
Meanwhile, Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said that the Arab peace initiative is a model to settle the Middle East conflict to achieve lasting and just peace between Israel and the Arab states.
"The implementation of the initiative will definitely uproot the conflict," he told reporters in Cairo. Abul Gheit said Israel should have adopted the initiative in 2002, when the peace overture was born at the Arab Summit.
"If it had done so, Israel would have spared itself too much violence that occurred over the past five years," he said. Abul Gheit also said that Israel should translate its words into serious action, commenting on recent statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who said that he was ready to discuss the Arab peace initiative.
