Qatar to be main supplier of gas to Belgium

Belgian gas supplier Distrigas has signed a new contract with Qatar that will guarantee natural gas supplies to Belgium for the next three decades.
Speaking on Belgian VRT Radio, Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht described Qatar as one of the most important future political and economic partners of his country.
A first tanker with natural gas from Qatar will arrive at the port of Zeebrugge later this month.
Qatar is expected to replace Algeria as the main supplier of natural gas to Belgium. For the past 20 years, Algeria has been one of the biggest gas suppliers to Belgium.
De Gucht said the new contract with Qatar meant that Belgium would not be dependent on Russian gas supplies. Only 4 percent of Belgian gas needs will be imported from Russia.
