Abbas: Factions in government do not have to abided by its position
Palestine, Politics, 2/26/2007
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said today that Palestinian factions due to participate in the forthcoming national unity government should not necessarily abided the government's stance.
Following the meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo, Abbas told a press conference that he briefed his counterpart on his recent European tour, describing the French's stance on the "Mecca agreement" as positive, adding that President Chirac has promised us to raise France's stance before the meeting of the European Union Council.
As for the government's stance, Abbas said the government's stance is a coalition of numerous and different parties, therefore, the government's stance is only obligatory on the Ministers who participate in the government and not the party itself.
He reiterated his commitment on the two-state solution and the signed agreements on the basis of the Roadmap plan in any advanced negotiations with Israel.
"The principles of starting negotiations with Israel are the vision of two-state, signed agreements, legitimacy, Arab agreements and the Roadmap plan. This is my stance from the beginning until end," He told reporters.
In response to a question about the possibility of imposing Israel a cut on him in light of Mecca agreement, President said: "this is possible and the financial siege imposed on us when the government was formed makes us suffer a lot."
