Mubarak: no time for interim or unilateral solutions to Palestinian cause
Egypt-Jordan, Politics, 2/26/2007
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak yesterday held a summit meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan during which they reviewed ways of reactivating the peace process, the issues of Iraq, Lebanon, Darfur and ways of boosting bilateral relations.
During the meeting, President Mubarak said there is no time for interim or unilateral solutions to the Palestinian cause, calling on the Palestinians to adopt strong and clear-cut policies that oblige Israel to abide by peace.
During their talks, Mubarak and the Jordanian Monarch called for commitment to Makkah agreement, urging Palestinian factions to rally their ranks. The two leaders stressed the need for reaching a final settlement, with President Mubarak expressing willingness to exert every possible effort to help establishing the independent Palestinian state.
The two leaders stressed the importance of good preparation for the coming Arab summit in Riyadh next month, stressing the need for adopting a clear-cut stance that would be offered to the Quartet meeting in Cairo in April.
Ambassador Awwad said President Mubarak is convinced that it is time for reaching a comprehensive peace agreement and that time has lapsed for interim moves.
The Presidential spokesman said lifting off the siege called for by Egypt and Jordan will not be achieved through appeals but rather through Palestinian policies that explain the issue of the Palestinian people in a way that is supported by legitimacy so that Israel can be put in the face of peace and its responsibilities as an occupation force and the Quartet in the face of its responsibilities.
He said Egypt and Jordan believe that the Palestinians should speak in one voice adding that policies which will be adopted by the new government are a purely Palestinian affair.
