On the visit of Syrian president to Iran
Syria-Iran, Politics, 2/21/2007

Head of Syrian Foreign Ministry Research Department, Samir al-Taki said here Saturday that the problems associated with the US aggression against Iraq and that of Israel against Palestinian people can be solved through Iran-Syria cooperation.

Speaking to IRNA in an exclusive interview on the occasion of President Bashar al-Assad's visit to Iran, he referred to full trust in and commitment to each other as the most significant features of Iran-Syria ties.

The Syrian official said that both countries have similar stances on the dangers facing the region, adding that there is a deep solidarity between them in confronting the US attack.

After his interview, Al-Taki, departed on a two-day visit to Iran on Saturday afternoon along with Syria's Vice President Farouk al-Shara and Foreign Minister Wahid Moualem.

He underlined that the Middle East situation is quite critical, adding that in their current efforts to come up with positive and constructive solutions to the difficulties encountering the region, Iran and Syria can play a decisive role through close cooperation with each other.

The Syrian expert said that Iran is subject to intensive foreign pressures and that al-Assad's visit to Iran shows its solidarity with the Iranian government and nation in facing such pressures.

He predicted that during the visit, some details about the common stances of both states on such issues as the situation in Iraq, future of Lebanon and Palestine's occupied territories as well as the region's strategic condition will be on the agenda of talks.

Underlining the importance of economic cooperation in raising bilateral ties, he said that ways of further expanding economic relations between Syria and Iran are expected to be discussed.

Turning to Iran's decisive role in a number of significant projects currently underway in Syria, he said, "Some joint projects have been implemented and others are still being worked out." Al-Taki noted that despite the prospect of assessment of all specified topics, major developments over the past two months, in particular the US escalating threats against regional states will be high on the agenda.
