Saudi official opposes threats against Iranians
Saudi Arabia-Iran, Politics, 2/21/2007
A senior Saudi Arabian official on Saturday announced his country's protest to any kind of threats against Iranians.
Turki Al-Faisal, the former Saudi Arabia ambassador to the US, made the remarks in an interview with Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, adding that Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal repeatedly declared Saudi Arabia's stance towards Iran which is contrary with the US and European newspapers' allegations.
"Saudi Arabia considers Iran as an important neighboring country which enjoys a long-standing historical status in the region," he said.
Turki Al-Faisal ended his mission in the US after 16 months as ambassador.
Pointing to a report published in the Washington Post on the Arab state's willingness to support Sunni Iraqis, he said, "We have reiterated that Saudi Arabia does not interfere in Iraq's internal affairs."
Referring to Bush's new plan to increase the number of American troops to crack down on violence and establish stability and security in Iraq, he noted that Saudi Arabia supports tranquility and peace in the neighboring country.
"The US invaded Iraq without any invitation from the Iraqi people, and the nation and government should comment on American troops' withdrawal from the country." According to the senior official, Iraq has various religions and tribes including Sunnis, Shiites, Yazidis, Christianias, Judaist, Kurdish, Arab, Turkmen and Persian natives which prevent the dismemberment of the country.
