Iranian, Syrian parties cooperation
Syria-Iran, Politics, 1/27/2007

Iran's House of Political Parties and the Syrian Baath Party signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) yesterday.

The MoU was inked by House of Political Parties member Hassan Yahyavi and alternate member of the Syrian Baath Party Ahmad al-Hassan.

As provided by the MoU, the two sides are to exchange delegations to hold talks on various issues.

The sides agreed to take joint stances on regional and international issues at conferences and congresses.

They also agreed to exchange books and university professors to teach Persian and Arabic languages and literature and to open opportunities for their youth to engage in productive activities.

A delegation from Iran's House of Political Parties, headed by it's chairman, Ayatollah Hossein Moussavi Tabrizi, arrived in Syria Monday evening for talks with Syrian officials.

The delegation, comprising representatives from various Iranian political parties, visited Syria upon the invitation of its ruling Baath Party.

It held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, officials of the Baath Party and National Progressive Front and Minister of Religious Endowments Ziyad al-Ayubi.

A statement issued by Iran's House of Political Parties and the Syrian Baath Party Thursday prior to winding up their visit said Damascus supported Iran's right to access peaceful nuclear energy.

Syria also condemned attempts to pressure Iran, particularly by the US, to abandon its peaceful nuclear activities.
