JKLF chief calls for Shiite-Sunni harmony

Calling for harmony between Shias and Sunnis in Jammu & Kashmir, JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik yesterday said some vested interests were trying to create a wedge between the two communities.

There have been attempts by vested interests to create a divide between Shiite and Sunni Muslims but we have to maintain harmony to foil such designs, Malik told a rally in the Shiite-dominated Zadibal area.

Referring to some posters pasted by unscrupulous elements in the area, the JKLF chairman said the his organization views moves as part of the nefarious plan to divide the people of the valley on sectarian lines.

"We have to demonstrate unity and frustrate the designs of the enemy who are bent on dividing us," Malik said.

Accompanied by some Shiite intellectuals, Malik announced formation of a team of volunteers who will ensure trouble-free observance of Muharram ceremonies by the Shiite community.

"Our volunteers will keep a close watch during the forthcoming Muharram processions so that any attempt to create disturbances will be averted," the pro-independence leader said.

Reiterating his demand for involvement of Kashmiris in the ongoing dialogue process, Malik said the issue cannot be resolved by ignoring the real party.

Kashmiris are the basic party to the issue and their participation in the dialogue is imperative in solving the long standing problem, he said, adding that his group has kicked off a campaign to mobilize public opinion for their involvement in the dialogue process.
