Syrian speaker says Iran Syria are now main players
Syria-Iran, Politics, 11/13/2006
Syria's parliament speaker Mahmoud al-Abrash met with head of Iran's Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani today.
Referring to the present good state of bilateral ties, he said, "The existing political harmony and friendly political relations can be used to promote commercial, trade, and tourism ties, as well."
Hojatoleslam Rafsanjani in a separate meeting with the Syrian people's parliament speaker stressed the need for continual consultations and cooperation to solve the exiting problems in Palestine and Lebanon.
He added, "Maintaining the shared achievements in our two countries' foreign policy and changing the course of regional developments in favor of the Lebanese, Iraqi and Palestinian nations needs tight, continuous consultations and cooperation."
Expressing serious concern about the ongoing internal developments in Lebanon, he said, "The United States and Israel are systematically contributing to the prevalence of discord and chaotic conditions among Lebanese groups, which calls for awareness and wisdom of those groups and the entire Lebanese nation to dismantle those nasty plots." The head of the country's Expediency Council referring to the situation in Iraq and the dead end with which the occupation forces have been faced there, said, "The Americans, faced with the lingering chaotic conditions in Iraq and the new developments in their own land have lost control of the leading role in Iraq and might resort to an irrational decision as an escape goat."
He said, "The regional nations are faced with very tough days ahead."
The Syrian Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Abrash, too, said during the meeting, "Increased potentials of Iran and Syria during the course of the past two decades have turned our countries into main players in regional developments." He added, "Close relations between Iran and Syria can dismantle the plots hatched against our nations." Al-Abrash considered the roles played by Tehran and Damascus in restoration of peace and stability in Iraq as "significant" despite the Western phony claims, adding, "The United States is the main obstacle in the way of establishment of brotherly ties between Syria and post-Saddam Iraq."
