Hariri assassination tribunal will be created despite threats
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 10/3/2006

Head of the Future bloc in Parliament MP Saad Hariri said last week that an international tribunal will be formed to put on trial the suspects in Prime Minister Rafic Hariri's assassination, despite ongoing "threats."

He stressed that the killers will be brought to justice and their campaign of destruction and killing will be uncovered by the UN commission investigating the February 14 bombing and other assassinations.

Speaking at an iftar meal, marking the end of the Ramadan fasting day, head of the Future bloc said attempts to scuttle the creation of the international tribunal will fail. The gathering was held in honor of the Future Youths Movement, and attended by deputies representing the Future bloc in Parliament as well as a large number of Future Movement members. Hariri made clear that the creation of the international tribunal will not destabilize Lebanon, but it 'threatens' those who killed the late Premier and carried out a series of bombings and assassinations in the country.

In his name and on behalf of Mrs. Nazek Hariri and the entire Hariri family, head of the Future bloc praised the work of Mr. Serge Brammertz, the chief UN investigator and the team that is probing Prime Minister Hariri's killing. He voiced confidence that the UN team will uncover the truth and punish the killers, describing a recent report by the group as a milestone. Citing comments by 'followers' of Syrian intelligence services claiming that the international tribunal will not be created, MP Hariri said he was confident the judicial body will be formed, regardless of the seniority of those involved.

Head of the Future bloc pointed out that the late premier had shouldered many burdens and difficulties to maintain confidence in the country, adding the same should happen now to restore confidence in Lebanon.
