Iranian minister: Present age characterized by honor of Islam
Libya-Iran, Politics, 9/14/2006

Libya's Minister of Culture Nouri al-Hamidi, on the sidelines of the 7th OIC Information Ministers Meeting yesterday, met his Iranian counterpart Mohammad-Hossein Saffar-Harandi and the two ministers discussed various issues.

At the meeting, Saffar-Harandi urged the need for unity among members of the world of Islam, given their commonalties as Muslims, hoping that the ongoing event will bear favorable outcomes for Islam and Muslims.

Turning to the fact that there are many commonalties among various sects of Islam, the minister said that the Islamic governments are duty-bound to underline such common features and avoid sowing the seed of discord.

Saffar-Harandi pointed to the scientific, economic and political achievements of the world of Islam as a thorn in the eye of enemies and said that any common negative approach by adversaries of the world of Islam is considered as Muslims' point of strength.

He pointed to the savage attacks of Israel on the Lebanese people and the West's support for the move, in particular that of US, and said, "It is obvious that they attempt to take revenge on the whole world." Stating that the present age is one characterized by the honor of Islam and Muslims as well as the humiliation of the enemies, he hoped that such an opportunity will be seized by the Islamic states.

"This can be achieved through proper publicity by dissemination of information," he added.

The Iranian minister said that today world nations' understanding of imperialism and the US despotism is undeniable, adding that such an understanding has made the influence of Western states on the world of Islam quite difficult.

For his part, the Libyan minister said that any move against a great religion such as Islam, which is of great value to the world, merely aims to misportray it.

He referred to the commonalties between the two countries and the glorious victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and said that it was not merely a political revolution rather was rooted in the purely Islamic culture.

Al-Hamidi hoped that the 7th OIC Information Ministers Meeting, which is currently underway in the Saudi port city of Jeddah, will achieve its preset goals.
