Russia: Sanctions on Iran after its reply not feasible on nuclear issue
Iran-Russia, Politics, 8/25/2006

Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said today that Russia believes it would be inexpedient to impose any sanctions on Iran in response to its declared intention to go ahead with uranium enrichment work in its territory.

He recalled that Iran's statement was in reply to the proposal from the group of six (five permanent UN Security Council members and Germany) regarding compensations offered in exchange for a stop to all uranium enrichment activities.

"In any case Russia will keep pressing for a political and diplomatic settlement (of the Iranian nuclear issue) coupled with full and strict observance of all non-proliferation regimes, Ivanov told reporters.

According to the Russian minister, "Contemplating sanctions now would be at least premature and inexpedient."

Also, a Russian parliamentarian said today that Iran's nuclear issue should be solved through diplomatic channels.

"As far as Iran's nuclear problem in concerned, one should not speak from the standpoint of force," said Chairman of the Federation Council of Defense and Security Committee Viktor Ozerov.
Ozerov said Iran is not a country that the global society can put it under pressure to give up its nuclear program.

Sanctions have never proved effective, said Ozerov, adding that issuance of sanctions against Iran will leave adverse impact on the international community.
