Sorour: Egypt not to abandon Arab, Muslim identity
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 8/16/2006
Replying to the inquiries of the citizens on the website of the ruling National Democratic Party, Egypt's Speaker of the People's Assembly Ahmed Fathi Sorour said that Egypt can never abandon its Arab and Muslim identity.
On Lebanon, Sorour indicated that Egypt played a very important role in supporting Lebanon at the political and diplomatic levels. This is plus providing medical and food aid to Lebanon during the Israeli offensive.
On the participation of the Arab Parliament in the face of the offensive in Lebanon, Sorour noted that the Arab Parliament is a transitional one and it will be put into force within the coming five years after due ratification on the part of the other Arab countries. On Copts, Sorour noted that he refuses to regard them as minority, rather part of the fabric of the Egyptian community. Sorour, however, denied reports on the dissolution of the People's Assembly in the next parliamentary session in 2007, adding that slate system has not adopted so far.
